Abstract

In Ayurveda, Rakta (blood) is considered the essence of human life. When blood becomes vitiated or impure due to improper dietary habits or seasonal transitions, it serves as a catalyst for various systemic diseases. To address this, Ayurveda employs a sophisticated therapeutic modality known as leech therapy (Jaloukavacharana). Medicinal leeches are uniquely utilized for their ability to selectively extract impure blood, thereby alleviating clinical symptoms. During the haematophagic process, the leech secretes saliva into the host's bloodstream, introducing a complex cocktail of bioactive compounds. The primary constituent, Hirudin, acts as a potent anticoagulant and analgesic. This natural analgesic property ensures that the phlebotomy process remains virtually painless for the patient. Clinical applications of leech therapy are extensive, particularly in dermatology for treating conditions such as acne, Kusta (psoriasis/leprosy), Visarpa (erysipelas), and recurrent abscesses. Furthermore, it is highly effective in managing vascular disorders characterized by impaired circulation- including varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), non-healing ulcers, and necrosis. By stimulating capillary regeneration and enhancing microcirculation, leech therapy promotes systemic healing. This paper outlines these therapeutic benefits to advocate for the wider integration of leech therapy in public health.
